WHAT IS KYBELLA?

KYBELLA® is the only injectable solution FDA-approved for the reduction of excess submental fat under the chin. Composed of deoxycholic acid, a natural compound found in the body, KYBELLA® is injected into fat deposits that create the appearance of a “double chin” or unwanted neck fullness. Once injected, KYBELLA® can dissolve and initiate removal of the metabolized fat cells from the body.

KYBELLA® is typically used for fat that has accumulated under the chin area.

HOW DOES KYBELLA WORK?

KYBELLA® produces wonderful results! The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is synthetic deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that breaks down and absorbs fat by breaking down cell membranes of fat cells.  When injecting KYBELLA®, some of the fat cells are targeted and destroyed. The dissolved fat then gets cleared by the lymphatic and circulatory systems. These target fat cells are removed gradually over the span of several weeks. KYBELLA®/deoxycholic acid follows the same path. It is metabolized, broken down, and is excreted as waste.

 

How much fat can KYBELLA treat?

The amount of fat that KYBELLA® can target is moderate to severe which means it can be very effective for a wide range of individuals. KYBELLA® is designed to target small areas of fat in the submental area, specifically in the chin and jowl area. KYBELLA® is injected into the target area and the substance helps break down the fat and the fat cells are removed through the body’s own natural processes.

 

Who Can Be Treated With KYBELLA?

KYBELLA® is suitable for adult men and women of all ages who are experiencing fullness in the chin/submentum area, often referred to as a “double chin”. What Areas Can Be Treated With Kybella?

Although KYBELLA® is only FDA-approved for fat reduction underneath the chin and jowls, many providers have discovered that this injection can work on other areas of stubborn body fat.  KYBELLA® is typically used for the chin/sub mental area or “double chin”. It may also be successfully used for fat pockets around the bra, knees and abdomen areas. In Europe, KYBELLA® injections are being used to treat small fat deposits on the elbow, upper arms, knees, and even the stomach.

 

FDA approval for treatments is important because this means the drug itself is thoroughly tested and proven to be effective.

 

Does Kybella work on Jowls?

Yes it can. For some patients, sagging skin around the jawline can be caused by excess fat, and KYBELLA® can effectively dissolve these cells over time. KYBELLA® can treat jowls, especially when it is combined with other treatments for optimal results.

 

Does KYBELLA® Tighten Skin?

If you have loose skin below the jawline contributing to the appearance of a double chin or neck fullness, you may be a candidate for laser or radio frequency microneedling treatments in addition to  KYBELLA®. KYBELLA® delivers the best results to individuals with excess fat who still have good skin elasticity, which enables the skin to retract nicely as the treatment area becomes leaner.

For those with extreme laxity or a lot of excess skin, a neck lift may be the only satisfaction option. We will be honest with you about whether this treatment is likely to produce the results you are seeking. If your provider does not feel that we can address your access or loose skin in a satisfying way, your provider may refer you to a highly respected plastic surgeon to explore the benefits of a neck lift. Some patients still elect to have the procedure to remove the excess fat because it is their best option and they want to see what results they can achieve and firmly do not want a neck lift or plastic surgery. Your provider has immense experience and can help you decide what treatment to have or not have.

Yes, KYBELLA® is FDA approved and safe for use as indicated when injected by a skilled, licensed nurse, nurse practitioner or doctor provider.

 

Who should not receive KYBELLA®?

Do not receive KYBELLA® if you have an infection in the treatment area.

 

Before receiving KYBELLA®, tell your healthcare provider about all of your medical conditions, including if you:

• Have had or plan to have surgery on your face, neck, or chin; have had cosmetic treatments on your face, neck, or chin; have had or have medical conditions in or near the neck area; have had or have trouble swallowing; have bleeding problems; are pregnant or plan to become pregnant (it is not known if KYBELLA® will harm your unborn baby); are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed (it is not known if KYBELLA® passes into your breast milk).

 

Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Especially tell your healthcare provider if you take a medicine that prevents the clotting of your blood (antiplatelet or anticoagulant medicine).

 

What are the possible side effects of KYBELLA®?

KYBELLA® can cause serious side effects, including

• Nerve injury in the jaw (which can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness)
• Trouble swallowing
• Injection site problems including: a collection of blood under the skin (hematoma) or bruising, damage to an artery or vein if KYBELLA® is inadvertently injected into it, hair loss, open sores (ulcers), damage and tissue cell-death (necrosis) around the injection site. Call your healthcare provider if you: begin to develop weakness in the muscles of your face, or your smile becomes uneven; have difficulty swallowing, or if any of the symptoms that you already have get worse; develop open sores or drainage from the treatment area

 

The most common side effects of KYBELLA® include swelling, pain, numbness, redness, and areas of hardness in the treatment area.

What Does The Kybella Treatment Feel Like?

KYBELLA® treatment is virtually painless – the area is numbed before it is injected. KYBELLA® requires a series of small injections with a very small, thin needle to the desired treatment area.

 

Does Kybella Hurt?

During a KYBELLA® treatment, many claim no sensation or pain at all since a prescriptive strength numbing cream is used during injection. Post KYBELLA® treatment, you may feel a slight tingle or short-lived burning sensation in the treated area once the numbing wears off. This sensation is totally mild, is treatable with Tylenol, and does not keep you from your normal activities post treatment.

 

Is Kybella Suitable For Men Too?

Absolutely. Men love KYBELLA® for its ease of use; treatments take just a few minutes and you can go back to your day’s activities.

What to expect at my KYBELLA procedure visit?

The procedure for KYBELLA® treatment is quite simple. Patients arrive an hour prior to treatment and a topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area. Then, once the numbing cream is cleaned from the skin, the submental area or any other injection sites are marked with a grid, and KYBELLA® is injected into these marked locations. Due to the nature of injectables, we advise all patients to refrain from using any blood thinners for at least one week before KYBELLA® treatment.

 

After any KYBELLA® procedure, ice is applied to the injection sites, and it’s good to ice the affected area throughout the day following treatment in order to minimize any swelling. Dr. Bloy recommends that patients keep their heads elevated both during the first day and overnight, and encourages patients to avoid intensive exercise for several days post-treatment.

 

How Long Does The Treatment Take?

Before treatment, the under-chin area is numbed with topical anesthetic, which reduces any potential discomfort during the procedure. Following a carefully planned strategy, Your provider will administer the KYBELLA® injections throughout the treatment region. Once the injections are complete, ice will be applied to mitigate any potential swelling or redness that may occur.

For the chin/submentum fullness, also called the “double chin”, treatment takes no longer than 30 minutes.  Areas of the body such as the bra bulges or knees typically take 30-45 minutes.

 

How Many Kybella Treatments Will I Need?

KYBELLA® is administered by bottle called a “vial”.  Each vial typically treats an area the approximate size of two business cards.

For the most effective results, a patient will need between three and four sessions. After the first treatment session, a patient should wait at least a month before having the second treatment. Sessions are generally spaced four to six weeks apart, depending on both swelling and the amount of submental fat present. The reason for this is because the dissolution of fat occurs over time and is a relatively slow process. Typically, results begin to show after several weeks.

 

Typically a full chin will require one to four vials per treatment, depending on the level of fullness.  Those with larger pockets of fat may require successive treatments spaced no less than one month apart.  Those who are looking for the maximum correction may desire up to 6 treatments, spaced no less than one month apart.Those looking for an ideal amount of correction are generally recommended to receive multiple vials and or treatments. How Soon Will I See Results Of Kybella?

Results from KYBELLA® typically develop within a few weeks post treatment.

For most patients, the results of KYBELLA® gradually become visible over the course of several weeks as fat continues to be eliminated from the body. Treatment can be repeated within four weeks of each KYBELLA® session to achieve further fat reduction, and the final outcome is typically apparent after three to four months.

 

When KYBELLA® injections are performed by a highly trained and experienced injector, the results can be incredible (for ideal candidates). For those who are best suited for KYBELLA®, our expert practitioner carefully plans and customizes your individualized treatment’s approach to deliver optimal improvement and high-quality aesthetics.

 

Unlike other injectable treatments that deliver immediate results, KYBELLA® typically takes a few treatments spaced 1 month apart to achieve optimal results. It usually takes around three to four months before fat reduction is complete and final results can be seen.

In a clinical study for KYBELLA®, those treated with up to 6 treatments noticed up to 80% reduction in the fullness of the area under their chin. Will My Results From Kybella Look Natural?

Yes. Because KYBELLA® gradually works to reduce fat cells, results simulate a weight loss type of outcome (when correct treatment protocols are followed).

 

Who Should Not Get Kybella?

Those with an infection in the desired treatment area should not receive KYBELLA®. Pregnant or nursing mothers should also not receive KYBELLA® as it has not been determined whether Kybella is passed through the system.  KYBELLA® should be used with caution for those with bleeding abnormalities, as bleeding or bruising in the treatment area may occur. For these clients, CoolSculpting may be a better alternative.

 

Is There Any Downtime From Kybella?

While there is no downtime from a KYBELLA® treatment, and you may return to normal activities post treatment, there may be “social downtime” if swelling or bruising present.

 

What Are The Common Side Effects Of Kybella?

The common side effects from a KYBELLA® treatment are bruising, swelling, redness, pain, and numbness and areas of hardness in the treated area may result.Please keep in mind that these are not all of the possible side effects from KYBELLA®.

 

What Should I Do To Get Ready For My Kybella Treatment?

There are no pre-care instructions prior to receiving a KYBELLA® treatment. We recommend receiving KYBELLA® treatment at least 3-6 months prior to any special event you may have to allow time for results to fully develop.

 

What Is The Follow Up Care After My Kybella Treatment?

There is nothing extra you are required to do post Kybella treatment.

 

When Should I Get My Next KYBELLA Treatment?

If you are a candidate for multiple treatments, you should wait 4 weeks before receiving another treatment in the same area.

 

Can I Get A KYBELLA Treatment Before A Special Event Or Travel?

No. Because results take a few months to develop, and because some post treatment swelling, bruising and pain can develop, KYBELLA® should be scheduled several months prior to your expectation of results.

 

How many vials of KYBELLA will I need?

KYBELLA® treatment requires one to several vials and one to several treatments depending on the level of fullness in the desired treatment area(s).  Each vial is priced accordingly, and package discounts may be available for those looking to purchase several vials.
